Pond life - digging deeper

The digger and bulldozer have now been joined by a roller. They have not only carved out the space for the pond itself and dug down to form the beginnings of where the water will go but also moved a great deal of earth from the surrounding hillside to soften the landscape. It means that the apple & pear trees have been lost but they never did seem to bear much fruit. Now they have marked the deep water zone in white chalk powder. This will have a vertical retaining wall along one side. The rest of the pond will have gently sloping sides where the plants can have different depths water of water depending on their needs. The deep water zone is necessary for there to be a temperature gradient in hot weather. Well that's the theory anyway.
