Mild wet, foggy weather has kept the garden green and lush. Bright sparks of colour are most welcome on gloomy days: winter flowering Jasmine and Iris Unguicularis are a joy but difficult to photograh in the dull low light. Bright red berries on the wild Dog Rose too. But then the sun breaks through and lights up the olive grove and there is a sense that spring might not be far away.

December has been chilly with thick frost and fog in the mornings. December and a few days of chilly but bright sunny weather gets me out into the garden busy planting those shrubs and bulbs that really ought to have gone in ages ago. And a new ornament for the garden - a rather large but sophisticated terracotta pot, seen here with the China roses in full bloom and berries of Pyracantha.
There is an autumn feel to the air and the Sedums are out in splendour. I have decided that these tough plants deserve more representation and so bought a dozen new varieties at the Murabilia flower show in Lucca last weekend. I have selected ones which are not too tall and have interesting dark colours and/or variagation - so let's see how they get on.
Otherwise the theme here is blue at the moment: Nepeta having a second blooming; Perowskia still with us despite having bloomed all summer; Caryopteris and Ceratostigma.
Happy Bloom Day! and thank you to Carol at May Dreams Garden for hosting.
The dry garden is a blaze of hot colour, partly thanks to wild poppies I have allowed to set seed but largely a mixture of Achillea: Paprika, Terracotta and a yellow one on short stems with nice silver foliage (? Flowers of Suphur?). Also a red form of Gaura. The addition of Nepeta, Verbena venosa and Salvia barrelieri calms the fervid intensity. I am trying Salvia 'Alan Chickering' for the first time and very much admire the spires of spikey flowers but worry that it will been seen off in the winter cold. But I have finally managed to get an Eryngium to grow and flower - must do more next year.
Cistus is a wild flower that grows on the scrubby rocks or 'garigue' along the roadside here.
In the garden cistus is invaluable: it will tolertate extremely poor conditions and drought. Most cistus also seem to be resistent to the cold. I could not have managed without this plant to cover unsightly piles of rubble and to underplant shrubs not to mention the colourful planting on the teraces. But many Italians do not even know that it exists as a garden plant. Colours and patterns of flowers are very varied and some grow tall whereas others as low growing. There is even a later flowering Yellow 'tardiflorens'. What's not to like?
I went with the Giardino Romano yesterday to visit the garden of the late and well respected gardener Joan Tesei. The weather was pretty grim and either raining or about to rain. Whilst the flowers & roses were pleasant and just about holding up under the wieght of water, the foliage really carried the day. Here is a Vitex agnus castus silhouetted against the cloudy sky, perhaps all the more dramatic under the dismal conditions. It had been placed here on a corner very carefully so that its foliage could be appreciated in profile. Happy Gardeners' Foliage Day.
I had not appreciated how varied Irises can be, not just in terms of colour and petal form, but also growth habit and flowering time. This group of late flowering irises are rather pleasing, arriving at a time when the first rush of May blooms is starting to relent: Iris 'Riverboat Blues' with darker Iris 'Indigo Princess' behind. I bought a selection of irises produced by specialist grower Giardini Toscani in Cosentino, near Arezzo. Sadly the labels have been lost so I have had to search the on-line catalogue to remind myself of their names: Giardini Toscani YYvonnehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00480649254768078373noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7835777645235116330.post-33032386712493430392013-05-16T16:10:00.003+02:002013-05-16T16:12:26.384+02:00GBBD May 2013

Sorry to have missed GBBD Yesterday but I went to Florence to visit the garden of Irises and see the annual iris competition. The site is
managed by a voluntary group Societa' Italiana dell'Iris (donations box at the gate) and is in its 57th
year. The garden is easy to get
to – we took a train to Firenze SMN then taxi to Piazzale Michelangelo and
afterwards walked back to Ponte Vecchio via the rose gardens. The Iris
garden is below the ancient city walls in an olive grove and slopes down quite
a long way. There is a
large area at the top where the winners of every competition since 1957 are on
show. The
grouping of so many different irises in the olive grove was very nice indeed. Strange how they are so different in form and colour but blend together beautifully. <span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif"; mso-ansi-language: EN-US; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA; mso-fareast-font-family: Calibri; mso-fareast-language: IT; mso-fareast-theme-font: minor-latin;">The competitors for next year as well as the current year are in large
beds: they seem to plant them and get the plants established a year in
advance. Highly recommended - the garden is open until 20th May. Y

Yes, I know that Rosa Banksiae Lutea is terribly common here and that it has little fragrance, but what a display and so early in the season. Just as abundant is R Banksiae Normalis which has single white flowers and the scent is almost overpowering. Another form which I find very useful for covering large areas is R Banksiae Purezza, which has large double flowers but not much scent. I am also trying to grow R Banksiae Lutescens which has single Yellow flowers and strong perfume but is rather sensitive to the cold, or at least it seems to be here whilst still a small plant. All of them deserve garden space. Y

Bloom Day this month has seen a terrific rise in temperatures and a drop in the horrible winds.

Today the wind is blowing a gale - more than 40 km/hr - and the dessicating effects are devastating, undoing all the good of the winter rains. So a chance to reflect on what is undoubtedly the most cheerful aspect of the garden: spring bulbs. In fact 'Cheerfulness' is one of my favourite daffodils, both for the complex flower form and scent.

But here in central Italy we see very few bulbs, at least as compared with England, and rarely in major planting schemes and drifts. I prefer more natural plantings and oten use species bulbs such a Tulipa Clusium. Not only are they more subtle coloured and delicate but more likely to come back in subsequent years.

Strange really, because a lot of familiar bulbs originate from the Mediterranean and in spring you can see fields of wild daffodils (Jonquils etc) in Sicily. Also many bulbs come from climates where the summer is hot and dry but winter very cold; Tulipa Turkestania is another of my favourites.
Not forgetting corms either: Anenome Coronaria is also a native flower in central Italy and deserves to be more widely appreciated.Yvonnehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00480649254768078373noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7835777645235116330.post-57359808799264965422013-03-22T12:03:00.001+01:002013-03-22T12:05:05.197+01:00Spring?

For me spring starts when the almond tree outside the window start to blossom. The first buds opened two days ago and now we have showers of snowy petals drifting in the strong winds. When I was a child we took our spring timetable from the damson tree at the end of the garden; always the first to bloom.
Well October is here already and the weather is still warm, mostly mid 20s, but the occasional day of rain has transformed the garden. Not only has green foliage recovered but now the roses are blooming again. The Chinas are especially free flowering but I think almost every rose bush is showing some blooms.

The Perovskia is still in bloom - such a faithful plant, bringing us flowers right since June.

Meanwhile I have been trimming back the cistus, phlomis and teuchriums before winter and generally tidy up; I am waiting for the temperature to drop a bit more before I start to plant new plants and bulbs.

We came here with the Mediterranean Garden Society to visit a very special garden: La Mortella created by Sir William and Lady Walton as a sanctuary for the composer's musical creations. They arrived in 1956 on what was then a barren rocky outcrop with no fresh water supply. Susana, Lady Walton, then went on to create a lush tropical paradise with plants raised herself mostly from seeds she had brought from her native Argentina and had found in other places on her travels. The lower 'valley' part of the garden was designed by Russell Page but the inspiration for the planting was entirely Susana's.

The lush vegetation and the interplay of light and shade, water splashing and quiet depths give this part of the garden a magical feel. It is also quite difficult to photograph as the vistas often run from dark to light. The Walton's house was built into the rockface and is completed obscured by creepers so as not to impact on the garden - a revolutionary idea in those days.
We were very lucky to have as our guide MGS member Alessandra Vinciguerra, who has been curator of the garden for 15 years and head of the Foundation La Mortella since the death of Susana in 2010. Not only does she know every plant individually but she was the close companion of Susana and is able to share many entertaining and inspiring stories about this most remarkable gardener.

The garden now reaches up to the top of the cliffs with increasingly native 'maquis' style planting where there are memorials to Sir William and Susana with views across the Bay of Naples.

The gardens are not 'static' but continue to evolve. I recommend that anyone who is in the Naples area takes the ferry across to Ischia and spend some time in this eartlhy paradise - lunch in the tropical surroundings of the tea room was excellent. I also recommend a visit to the nearby thermal springs of La Negombo, where the hot pools have been designed to appear as an ancient part of the natural scenery and gardens.

One word of advice however: do not take any unnecessary valuables or wear jewellery - a mugger tried to wrench the watch off my wrist as we were in the car and despite a furious struggle he only let go when I bit his hand!
Badgers have broken into my garden again and are causing terrible damage, digging up entire plants and throwing them aside; huge holes everywhere, many plants dead. I know I blame them for everything but can't help agreeing with Matt on this occasion ....
Growth has resumed with a great rush following the torrential rain and north winds of two days ago. The new foliage is in itself a pleasing sight - the morning light on the Agnus castus or the Rosa sanguinea, for example.
